Dr. Rony Avritscher is an Associate Professor ]in the Department of Interventional Radiology at UTMDACC. Dr. Avritscher earned his medical degree from the University of Sao Paulo, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. He completed his radiology residency at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston and Interventional Radiology Fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center and subsequently joined the faculty in 2006. He is certified by the American Board of Radiology and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Interventional Radiology. His main research focus is in image-guided interventions for hepatocellular carcinoma and other liver cancers, including translational research in animal models of liver disease and catheter-based therapies. He is interested in innovative ways to enhance the efficacy of our minimally-invasive approaches and is the recipient of several grants to investigate image-guided minimally-invasive therapies in liver cancer. He established an independent laboratory and was the recipient of a prestigious individual investigator award from CPRIT (Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas) with current focus on characterizing the heterogeneous nature of longitudinal changes of liver tumor immune microenvironment during treatment, as well as implementing novel molecular and imaging approaches to reduce disease recurrence. He participates in both the SIR and SIO research grant study section, as well as in the research committee. Dr. Avritscher is the recipient of SIRF and SIO research grants for his work on transcatheter arterial embolization in hepatocellular carcinoma. He was recently elected a fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology in 2018 and has been chairing diverse interventional oncology session workshops at the annual meeting. He received the Editor’s Award for Outstanding Laboratory Investigation from the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology in 2014. He has authored over several original manuscripts, books, and abstracts, and has been an investigator in multiple clinical trials.
