Riad Salem, MD MBA is Professor of Radiology, Surgery and Medicine, Vice-Chair, Image-Guided Therapy and Section Chief, Interventional Radiology in the Department of Radiology at Northwestern University in Chicago. His areas of interest include the use of image-guided techniques for the treatment of liver cancer including chemoembolisation, bland embolization and radioembolisation. He is a graduate of McGill University in Montreal, where he was recipient of the Wood Gold Medal and the J. Francis William Prize in Medicine and Clinical Medicine. He then completed his radiology residency in Washington, DC and a fellowship in interventional radiology (University of Pennsylvania), as well as a Master’s in Business Administration (Finance). He is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society and a Fellow of the Society of Interventional Radiology. He has delivered >600 lectures nationally and internationally, and published extensively on the subject of interventional oncology, with over 330 publications and an h index of 82. His current research focus on hepatocellular carcinoma includes advances in minimally invasive therapies as well as imaging methodologies following locoregional treatment. He serves as PI of the international, randomised phase III trial involving radioembolisation and sorafenib (STOP-HCC). His research focus has shifted with the completion of the first, prospective, FDA-approved trial of Prostate Artery Embolization for BPH, and is now working other IR colleagues to establish PAE as a standard of care treatment. He has also worked to develop trans-splenic intervention and portal vein reconstruction, permitting the conversion of non-transplantable patients to transplantability.
